New Agreement Reached
for Kohanaiki Development!
COMMUNITY'S EFFORTS LEAD
TO PARK PLANS FOR KOHANAIKI -
Summary:
An important agreement has been reached
between developer/landowner, the community and
the County
of Hawai`i on the future of Kohanaiki.
Under the agreement, the developer will provide
a 109-acre coastal park, with camping grounds, parking
spaces, public toilets and showers as well as an
access road. The developer plans to build residences
and a golf course, with an average of 680 feet of
open space between the private property and the shoreline.
The unprecedented plan, reached thanks to the aloha
and goodwill efforts of all parties, is a major contribution
to the quality of life in West Hawai`i.
It is hoped
that the Kohanaiki agreement can be a model when
development is proposed for shoreline
areas in the rest of Hawai`i.
Note: All
of the anchialine ponds, trails and historic
sites will be restored and monitored. There will
be an
innovative approach to monitoring and maintenance
of the natural and cultural resources. In this
agreement, there will be a public/private partnership
in the form of a committee made up of representatives
of the community, the landowner and the county
with equal 1/3 decision making power and also
shared responsibility of costs and labor for maintenance.
